Tea for Two and Two for Tea!

I’m not quite sure when I made the switch from drinking coffee for breakfast to drinking tea – it might have been after my children were born.  For some reason, we go through many cravings and changes when that occurs don’t we?  Now don’t get me wrong, I love coffee, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the house is enough to titillate my senses, but there is nothing more comforting for me now than a cup of hot tea with milk to wake me up every morning.  With that in mind, I’m bringing out my best tea set and serving up tea with Blueberry/Raspberry Oatmeal Breakfast Bars. 

We just got through some fresh blueberries and raspberries, and I’ve got to bring something to Fiesta Friday in a hurry.  So out popped the frozen variety, and I must say they weren’t too bad after all  :).  I halved this recipe and I got enough bars for a week of nutritious goodies for breakfast.  Oh, and by the way, the tea set was a hand-me-down from ma-in-law who claims she got it as a gift from relatives in South Africa.  Isn’t it just so swanky and grand?  There’s a creamer, sugar bowl, teapot and service for six. 


  • 2 1/4 cup oatmeal
  • 2 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cup fresh or frozen blueberries (I added half blueberries, and half raspberries)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tbs cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbs golden flaxseed meal


Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a mixing bowl combine the oatmeal, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, golden flaxseed meal, soda and salt. 


Melt the butter and pour over the oatmeal mixture.  Mix until incorporated and crumbly.  Press 2/3 of the oatmeal mixture into a 9 x 13 pan, saving the other 1/3 for the topping. 



In a separate bowl, combine the blueberries/raspberries, sugar and corn starch.  Mix until the blueberries/raspberries are evenly coated with the sugar and corn starch.  Pour over the bottom crust. 


Crumble the remaining oatmeal mixture over the blueberries/raspberries.  Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.  Remove from the oven and let cool completely before cutting.

I should make it a point to check out the Reader on WordPress which lets me follow blogs I’ve signed up for, but I somehow always seem to forget about it.   1. Well if ever you attempt Bebinca, I might just take a flight to L.A. and pay you a visit….it will be cheaper and faster than flying to Goa :)). I’ve never attempted to make it myself, and I probably wouldn’t, as I would end up eating it all myself, and I know the ingredients are not exactly “healthy” :)). Enjoy the weekend.


  2. That is a stunning tea set. I think tea is best when served in a pretty china cup, and a beautiful set makes it a party. And that lovely fruit snack is just the thing to go with a good cup of tea. Thanks for bringing the whole set to the party to share with us.


  3. Hi Loretta! Well, what can I say that hasn’t already been said? The tea set is stunning to say the least and the Breakfast Bars not only look utterly delicious they also match the tea service perfectly! I do go off coffee from time to time but I always return to it – that aroma…it just ensorcels me!! I’m not a great fan of milk so if I do drink tea, it’s always black and aromatic like Earl Grey or Lapsang. x


    1. Thanks Selma. I did enjoy staging it, although I’d loved for the pictures to have been more vibrant. Somehow the lighting did not work as well, even though it was natural. My last coffee was a few years ago in Madrid – cafe con leche, I enjoyed it so much, but I suffered the consequences later, after that I swore I’d never touch coffee again :)). Love Earl Grey too, probably my favorite of all teas. Enjoy your weekend.

    I’ve taken the opposite path. I’m waiting for my coffee as I type. Tea was something I drank once upon a time, but now it’s all about coffee beans. 😉

    Which teas do you drink? I still really enjoy green tea, but I was all about Earl Grey.


    1. Thank you Steven. I too love coffee, but after an incident in Madrid a few years ago with cafe con leche, I don’t believe it liked ME, so I gave it up. I drink regular tea every morning for breakfast, but I do also love green tea and I’ll have to say Earl Grey is my fav when indulging :). Thanks for the visit. I don’t believe we’ve met before? I’ll be paying your blog a visit soon.

    1. Thanks Ivy, I’m afraid I don’t have much information on the history of that tea set. My mother in law handed it down to me, and she got it as a gift from relatives in South Africa. It must have roots in China though.
